The Institute for Black Intellectual and Cultural Life presented A Celebration of Sinners, a two-day signature event in our Black Life / Black Visual Culture series, centered on the acclaimed Ryan Coogler film Sinners.”

A commissioned performance by Eden Brooklyn Dance Theater, set to music from the Sinners soundtrack
A live performance by Mississippi blues musician Steven Johnson and the Steve L. Johnson Band. Johnson is the grandson of blues legend Robert Johnson, whose life and music inspired the character of Preacher Boy Sammy in Sinners.
A short video featuring Dartmouth students and scholars reflecting on the film
A moderated conversation with Wunmi Mosaku, Academy Award–nominated actress and performer of “Annie” in Sinners, Iyabo Kwayana, filmmaker and Dartmouth professor of Film & Media Studies, and Michael Boyce Gillespie, Professor of Cinema Studies, New York University.

A Celebration of Sinners: The Podcast ~
If the film stayed with you, these conversations will too. A Celebration of Sinners: The Podcast brings together scholars and Dartmouth students in a series of conversations that take the film as seriously as it deserves. Ten episodes on Black horror, African spiritual traditions, Irish Gothic literature, the blues, and hoodoo each one going somewhere you wouldn't have expected. Each episode is hosted by Dr. Brittney Frantece, Thurgood Marshall Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of African and African American Studies, Dartmouth College, with one episode hosted by Dr. Kimberly Juanita Brown, Associate Professor, Department of English and Creative Writing, and Director, Institute for Black Intellectual and Cultural Life, Dartmouth College. Produced in collaboration with the Dartmouth Media Production Group.
